The Dangerous Toy and Baby Product Recalls Parents Should Know About

On average, more than 100 kids toys and baby products are recalled each year due to defect. And even though most recalls are voluntary, companies are rarely inclined to shout their foibles from the mountaintop. As a result, few parents ever hear about them. In fact, only 30 percent of recalled products ever make their way back to the manufacturer. Instead, they are handed down to other new parents, find their way into consignment shops, or end up on Goodwill shelves where they can potentially harm other children.

Fortunately, there are multiple government agencies ⏤ most importantly the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has jurisdiction over more than 15,000 kinds of consumer products ⏤ and watchdog groups like KidsinDanger.org and Safe Kids Worldwide who keep tabs on it all. In fact, six federal agencies have joined together to create Recalls.gov, an online hub where they “alert the American people to unsafe, hazardous or defective products.”

We also like to keep you updated on the latest defective toys, baby and parenting gear, and kid products, so that you don’t have to spend your day scouring government websites. We include the product, the defect, and the course of action you should take if you own the product. Although in all cases, the first action is always to get the dangerous toy away from your child. That said, here are all of last month’s recalls.

Carter’s 3-Piece Penguin Cardigan Set

Hazard: The cardigan’s toggle button can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children

The cardigan’s toggle button can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. There have been three reports of children putting a detached toggle button into their mouths. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Full Recall Details

Hauck Nerf® Battle Racer Go-Karts

Hazard: The steering wheel on the go-kart can detach, break or crack while in use, posing a laceration and/or collision hazard to young children.

Hauck has received 639 reports in the United States of the steering wheel detaching, breaking or cracking with one resulting in a laceration to a child’s face requiring stitches and one resulting in a minor scrape to a child’s chest. If you have this go-kart, make sure you keep your kid from using it until you contact Hauck and receive a replacement. Munchkin Waterpede™ Children’s Bath Toys

Hazard: The bath toy can break apart exposing small parts, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Hazard: The strings on the crib bumper exceed a safe length, posing a strangulation hazard to babies.

Hazard: A gap between the rails near the entrance way to the slide poses an entrapment hazard to young children.

Hazard: Battery compartment can overheat, poising fire and burn hazards

Hazard: The red crayons in the multi-color sets can contain glass, posing a laceration hazard to the user.

Hazard: The wheels and axles can detach from the wooden toy car, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Hazard: The recalled strollers violate the federal Stroller and Carriage standard. An infant can pass through the opening between the stroller armrest and the seat bottom and his/her head and neck can become entrapped by the armrest, posing entrapment and strangulation hazards.

Hazard: Batteries can overheat, swell, and expand, causing the battery cover to open or come off and expose hot batteries, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

Models LW2751, LW2752 and LW2962H are affected by this recall. The video monitors are black and were sold in two sizes; 7 inch wide by 5 inches tall and 9 inches wide by 6 inches tall. Hazard: The helmets fail to meet the federal safety standard, posing a risk of head injury.

It’s not exactly clear why these helmets aren’t up to snuff, but you should stop using them immediately. Helmets were distributed through schools and have the model number 16, SK-501N and a manufactured date between 09/2011 and 04/2017 printed in that format on a label on the inside of the helmet. Hazard: The children’s pajamas fail to meet the flammability standard for children’s sleepwear, posing a risk of burn injuries to children.

This recall involves two styles of children’s sleepwear garments. The first garment is a 100% polyester fleece pajama pant with the brand name “Sweet N Sassy” on the waist label and hang tag. The style number is located on the back of the brand label at the center waist. The second garment is a 95% polyester and 5% spandex onesie with long-sleeves, a hood and front zipper with the brand name “Delia’s Girl” at the neck label and hang tag. Hazard: Children’s limbs can become entrapped in the side openings of the step systems, posing a drowning hazard.

Confer Plastics has received two reports of kids getting their arms trapped in the step systems, resulting in minor abrasions. The concern is that this could happen and basically trap a kid in the water, putting him or her at risk of drowning. Models CCX-AG, CCX-IG, and CCX-AD are affected, and if you own one of them you should contact Confer Plastics for a repair kit, additional panels that will prevent entrapment when installed.
